Saint Teresa of Ávila / Las Moradas
Fifth Dwelling.
Chapter 1.
About this chapter
Teresa presents union with God as a gift beyond our own powers, leaving a deep certainty of His presence. The soul’s part is to surrender with simplicity and humility, without trying to produce the experience or understand it completely.

Fifth Dwelling
Chapter 1 | Adapted text
Oh, sisters! How could I explain to you the riches, treasures, and delights found in the fifth mansions?
I think it would be better to say nothing about the remaining mansions, because they cannot be explained well, the understanding cannot grasp them, and comparisons cannot make them clear. Earthly things are too lowly to express something so great.
Send light from heaven, my Lord, so that I may give these servants of Yours some understanding.
Since You allow some of them to enjoy these spiritual gifts so often, help them not to be deceived by the devil when he disguises himself as an angel of light, for they wish to please You.
And although I said “some,” there are actually very few who do not enter this mansion I am about to describe.
Many souls reach this mansion in some way, although not all reach the same level. Some only approach its entrance; others receive deeper graces within it. Yet even reaching the door is already a great mercy from God, for many are called, but few are chosen.
Although all of us who wear this holy habit of Carmel are called to prayer and contemplation—because that was our beginning: we descend from those holy Fathers of Mount Carmel who, in great solitude and with deep detachment from the world, sought this treasure, this precious pearl of which we speak—few of us truly prepare ourselves for the Lord to reveal that treasure to us.
Outwardly, we are well on the way toward what is necessary; but in the virtues, we need much, very much, to reach this point. We cannot afford the slightest carelessness.
Therefore, my sisters, let us rise up and ask the Lord that, since we can in some way enjoy heaven on earth, He may grant us His favor, so that our own fault does not prevent it. May He show us the way and give our souls strength to dig until we find this hidden treasure, for it truly is within us.
This is what I would like to explain, if the Lord allows me to know how.
I said “strength in the soul” so that you may understand that bodily strength is not required when God our Lord does not give it. He leaves no one unable to attain His riches: He is content for each person to give Him what they have. Blessed be so great a God.
But notice, daughters: for what we are discussing, God does not want you to hold anything back. Little or much, He wants it all for Himself. And according to what each of you understands she has received from Him, the graces she receives will be greater or smaller.
There is no better test of whether our prayer reaches union with God.
Do not think this is something dreamlike, as the previous state was. I say “dreamlike” because there the soul seems drowsy: it does not seem entirely asleep, yet it does not feel awake either.
Here, however, although the soul falls completely asleep to worldly things and to itself—for during that brief time it is, in fact, as though without its senses, and cannot think even if it wishes—no effort or technique is needed to suspend thought.
Even if it loves, it does not understand how it loves, what it loves, or what it would wish for.
In short, it is as though the soul had died completely to the world in order to live more fully in God.
It is a sweet death: as though the soul were torn away from every activity it can have while in the body. And it is delightful, because the soul truly seems to separate from the body in order to be more fully with God.
Indeed, I do not even know whether at that moment enough life remains in it to breathe. Now that I think about it, I believe not; or, if it breathes, it is unaware of doing so.
The understanding would like to devote itself entirely to grasping something of what it is feeling, but because it lacks the strength to reach it, it remains astonished. Thus, if it does not lose consciousness altogether, it cannot move a hand or foot, as we say of someone who has fainted so deeply that they seem dead.
Oh, the secrets of God!
I would never tire of trying to explain them if I thought I could get anything right. That is why I will say a thousand foolish things, in case I should ever manage to say something true, so that we may praise the Lord greatly.
I said this is not dreamlike because, in the previous mansion, until the soul has much experience, it is left wondering what happened: whether it imagined it, whether it was asleep, whether it was something given by God, or whether it was the devil disguised as an angel of light.
It is left with a thousand suspicions, and it is right to have them. For, as I said, even our own nature can sometimes deceive us in that state.
It is true that there is not so much room there for poisonous things to enter; but some “little lizards” can get in, being so agile that they slip in anywhere. Although they do no harm, especially if they are ignored, they often trouble us. I mean those little thoughts that come from the imagination and from what I have already explained.
But here, however agile those little lizards may be, they cannot enter this mansion. For here neither imagination, memory, nor understanding can interfere with this blessing.
And I dare to affirm that, if it truly is union with God, the devil cannot enter or do any harm. For His Majesty is so close, and so united with the soul's deepest part, that the devil does not dare approach; and he probably does not even understand this secret.
That makes sense: if it is said that the devil cannot know our thoughts, still less can he understand something so secret that God does not even leave it within the reach of our own thinking.
What a great blessing this state is, where that accursed one cannot harm us!
The soul is thus left with such great gains, because God works within it with no one to prevent Him: neither the devil nor even ourselves.
What will He not give, who so loves to give and can give whatever He wishes?
It seems I have confused you by saying “if it is union with God,” as though there were other kinds of union. And yes, of course there are.
There can also be unions in vain things. When someone greatly loves something empty or worldly, the devil can also seize or transport that person in some way. But he does not do it as God does, nor does he produce the same delight, the same satisfaction of the soul, or the same peace and joy.
Union with God is above every earthly joy, every delight, and every satisfaction. Moreover, the source from which these spiritual delights arise has nothing in common with the source of earthly pleasures. They are felt in a very different way, as you have surely experienced.
I once said that earthly pleasures seem to be felt in the heaviest and coarsest part of the body, or as though in the bones; and I think I was right, because I do not know how to express it better.
I feel you are still not satisfied, perhaps because you think you could be deceived, and that these inward things are difficult to examine.
Although what I have already said is enough for someone who has experienced it, because the difference is great, I want to give you a clear sign by which you cannot be mistaken or doubt whether it came from God. His Majesty brought it to my mind today, and it seems to me the surest sign.
In difficult matters, even when I think I understand them and am speaking the truth, I always say it this way: “it seems to me.” For if I am mistaken, I am very willing to believe what those with great learning and knowledge of doctrine say.
For although these great scholars may not have undergone such experiences, they have something special. God sets them as a light for His Church, and when something is true, He gives them light to accept it. And if they are not superficial or distracted people but servants of God, His greatness does not frighten them, because they understand well that God can do far more. Even when some details are not explained very clearly, they find sufficient indications in other writings to recognize that these things can indeed happen.
I have a great deal of experience of this. And I also have experience of some half-educated people who are frightened by everything, for they have cost me dearly.
At least, I believe that anyone who does not believe God can do far more than we understand, and has sometimes wished to communicate with His creatures in this way, has firmly closed the door to receiving these graces. Therefore, sisters, may that never happen to you. Believe that God can do far more. And do not concern yourselves so much with whether the person to whom God grants these graces is good or bad; His Majesty knows that, as I have already told you.
We have no reason to interfere in that. Our task is to serve His Majesty with simplicity of heart and humility, and to praise Him for His works and wonders.
Returning to the sign I say is the true one: consider this soul whom God leaves completely unable to act for itself, so that He may impress true wisdom more deeply upon it.
While in this state, it neither sees nor hears nor understands. This state always lasts a short time, and to the soul it seems even briefer than it probably was.
God fixes Himself in that soul's innermost depths in such a way that, when it returns to itself, it cannot possibly doubt that it was in God and God was in it. This truth remains so firmly established that, even if years pass without God granting the same grace again, the soul cannot forget it or doubt that it happened.
Let us leave aside for now the effects that remain afterward, for I will describe those later. What matters here is this: the principal sign is the profound certainty left in the soul that it was in God and God was in it.
Then you will ask me: “How did it see or understand this, if at that moment it neither sees nor understands?”
I do not say that it saw it at that moment, but that afterward it sees it clearly. And not because it is a vision, but because a certainty remains in the soul that only God can place there.
I know a person who did not know that God is in all things by presence, power, and essence. But through a grace of this kind that God granted her, she came to understand it so fully that she could no longer doubt it.
Afterward, she asked one of those half-educated people I have mentioned how God is in us. But he did not understand it well either, and replied that God was in us only through grace.
Yet the truth was already so firmly fixed in her soul that she did not believe him. She then asked others, who told her the truth, and this greatly comforted her.
You must not confuse yourselves by thinking that this certainty remains in the soul in a bodily way, as the body of our Lord Jesus Christ is in the Blessed Sacrament, although we do not see Him. Here it does not remain in that manner, but only through God's divinity.
How, then, can we be left with such certainty about something we did not see?
I do not know. These are God's works. But I do know that I am telling the truth: if a person is not left with this certainty, I would not call it union of the whole soul with God, but perhaps of one faculty of the soul, or one of the many other graces God can bestow.
In all these things, we must stop searching for explanations of how it happened. If our understanding cannot grasp it, why do we wish to lose ourselves trying to explain it?
It is enough to know that the One who does it is almighty. And if we cannot attain this through our own efforts, because it is God who does it, let us not expect to understand everything through our own abilities either.
Now I remember, concerning what I say about our not attaining this by our own strength, what you have heard the Bride say in the Song of Songs:
“The king brought me into the wine cellar,” or “brought me,” I think it says.
Notice that it does not say she went there by herself. It also says she was searching for her Beloved here and there.
I understand this to be the cellar into which the Lord wishes to bring us when He wills and as He wills. However much effort we make, we cannot enter by ourselves.
His Majesty must bring us in, and He Himself must enter the center of our soul. And to reveal His wonders more fully, He wants nothing of ours to intervene in this except a will completely surrendered to Him.
Nor does He wish the door to be opened to Him through the soul's faculties or the senses, because they are all asleep. He enters the center of the soul without needing any of them, just as He entered where His disciples were when He said, “Peace be with you,” and as He came out of the tomb without lifting the stone.
Later you will see how His Majesty wishes the soul to enjoy Him in its very center, far more than here, in the final mansion.
Oh, daughters! How much we might see if we did not insist on looking only at our own lowliness and misery.
Let us understand that we are not even worthy to be servants of so great a Lord, and that we are unable to attain His wonders by ourselves.
May He be praised forever. Amen.

Quinta Morada
